How to choose the right hair and makeup artist for you

Planning a wedding is so exciting, and for some, many decisions will come easily. But I hear very often that choosing a hair and makeup artist can be difficult to navigate – and quite overwhelming!

It’s a decision that is so important, for you only get married once, and making that once-in-a-lifetime decision can make all the difference to how you feel on your big day. It can be made even harder if you’re not used to wearing makeup and want to simply enhance your own natural beauty.

Here is my guide to making the best decision for YOU.

Connecting visually

Firstly, when you look at their website or social media, are you connecting visually with their images? Can you see yourself on this page, made up in the same style? You want to feel empowered and excited, not intimidated by it.

What is the quality like?

The quality of work is so key to making a decision. Someone could have thousands of followers, but if the quality is not up to scratch, then you may be disappointed.

What experience do they have?

Does this hair and makeup artist have first-hand experience of how timings run for weddings? Will their communication be thorough and easy beforehand and throughout? Can you trust that they will be there for you when needed, and not overrun? Will this person be a calming influence for you on the biggest day of your life? These are the questions you may ask yourself.

Are there REAL brides on their page?

The truth is, being a hair and makeup artist is more than just a technical skill; it’s an art form that requires an innate understanding of colour theory, features, and individual preferences. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. That’s why it’s crucial not to be swayed solely by social media metrics or glossy, styled shoots. Real brides, real experiences – that’s where the truth lies.

What do their reviews say?

Reviews don’t lie…if they have hundreds of positive reviews detailing a calm and empowering experience, then it’s very likely you will have a similar experience. It’s important to notice what real brides have to say.

Are you attracted by the price point?

Trust me, your hair and makeup aren’t where you should be focused on cutting costs. It’s one element of the day that I feel so strongly that budget should not affect your decision – because you need to choose who is right, not who’s cheapest.

If you’re still unsure, try to listen to what your heart is telling you – it will soon become clear.
